This Buffalo, New York, USA-based death metal band rose from the ashes of Baphomet, and released one album, The Dead Shall Inherit, in 1991 on Deaf Records. The name change was prompted by a German group who claimed prior use of the title, and Banished was selected to avert potential legal difficulties. However, their debut material under the new name was not without its problems. Several commentators were struck by the sleeve artwork of their 1993 album, designed by Tim Vigil from Faust Comic Books - unconsciously echoing a sentiment in the spoof ‘rockumentary’ This Is Spinal Tap, their guitarist Tom Frost justified the cover thus: ‘It’s not like a sexist thing in the sense that it’s real.
